Iris is one version of a series of irises painted by Van Gogh during his stay in a psychiatric hospital in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. The painting is characterized by the lack of tension that characterized Van Gogh's last works before his suicide in 1890. Irises, like a good portion of his paintings at the time, was inspired by the Japanese painting art of Ukiyo-e.Little appreciated during his lifetime, van Gogh gained fame after his death. Today he is widely regarded as one of the greatest painters in history, an artist whose work inspires imitators around the world, which contributed to the emergence of new artistic movements, i.e. Expressionism. His distinctive, dynamic brushstrokes, intense colors and emotional depiction of landscapes became recognizable features of Post-Impressionism. Many of his techniques, such as using paint straight from the tube (impasto) and painting from memory, were adapted by later artists. He experimented with applying color in dots and dashes, which influenced the development of his style.
Van Gogh began painting a few years before he turned 30, and created his most famous works in his last two years. He is the author of more than 2,000 works, including: 870 paintings, 150 watercolors and more than 1,000 drawings and 133 letter sketches. Today, his works are among the most recognized and most expensive works of art. Not commercially successful, he struggled with severe depression and poverty, which eventually led to his suicide at the age of 37.
