Józef Święcicki (1799–1868) – an officer of the Polish Army, a participant in the November Uprising, and the last commander of the famous 4th Line Infantry Regiment (“Czwartaki”). After the fall of the uprising, he lived in exile in France and England, where he was associated with the circles of the Great Emigration and General Maciej Rybiński’s Military Party.
The memoir is a valuable source for the history of the November Uprising. The author describes the events of the night of November 29, 1830, the combat operations of the 4th Line Infantry Regiment during the 1831 campaign, and the fate of the soldiers after crossing the Prussian border and being interned. These memoirs, edited and prefaced by an extensive introduction by Robert Bielecki, are among the most important accounts by participants in the struggle for the independence of the Kingdom of Poland.
