[Chronicle of the German Emperors]. Johann Boppenheuser. Habsburg Chronicle, That is, a Brief Description of All the Roman Emperors, from Rudolf I of that name to our praiseworthy, currently reigning Emperor Ferdinand II [...] Marpurg (Marburg) 1631. Published by Caspar Chemlin and Eberhart Kiesern, folio, p. 32, plate 23 (copperplate engravings), later binding, embossed and gilt leather, with marbled paper endpapers.
A Gallery of Roman Kings and Emperors of the Holy Roman Empire—from Rudolf I of Habsburg to Ferdinand II of Habsburg, though contrary to the title, it also includes rulers from other dynasties. The first four plates are: a portrait of the Landgrave of Hesse (to whom the volume is dedicated), the imperial coat of arms of the Habsburgs, an image of the statue of Nebuchadnezzar, and a view of the castle in Habsburg; the remaining 19 are portraits of successive rulers of the empire. Each portrait is accompanied by a verse description of the ruler’s reign, covering his most important political and military achievements. The work was published in 1631, during the Thirty Years’ War, when dynastic propaganda played a particularly important role in legitimizing the dynasty’s rule. Minor scuffs, water stains, and yellowing; otherwise in good condition.
