Mary with the child sits in the center of the picture in front of a group of trees and is served by angels while they take a break while fleeing. She holds the child sitting on her thigh with her left arm while she reaches for the fruit that the angel kneeling on the left in a cloth robe offers her. The child Jesus bends down to the right to the young John the Baptist, who is lying on the ground, to give him a piece of fruit. It holds on to the strap of the coat to prevent it from falling off. The St. Joseph sits in the shadows, facing away to the right of the group, absorbed in reading the Holy Scripture. A second angel stands on the left with a basket full of grapes. Two tree trunks frame the group of Mary with the child and emphasize them compositionally by reflecting the direction of movement of Mary's and the child's arms. Mary is dressed in a red robe and a blue cloak. The red of the coat together with the blue accent of the coat are the dominant color tones of the picture, while the clothing of the other figures, the trees and the sky are tonally tied into an overall color.
