EUROPEAN SCHOOL (CIRCA 1900-1920), Art Nouveau Portrait: The Byzantine Muse

This exquisite tondo (circular) composition is a quintessential manifestation of the Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) aesthetic, executed in the distinctive manner of Alphonse Mucha. The work features a stylized female profile, characterized by the "whiplash" curves of her raven hair and an intricate, jewel-like headdress. The use of gold pigment adds a Byzantine-inspired opulence, reminiscent of Mucha’s iconic posters for Sarah Bernhardt. The artist demonstrates remarkable precision in the ornamental details, blending floral motifs with geometric patterns within the decorative border. The ethereal color palette of muted teals and earth tones, contrasted with the shimmering gold accents, captures the decadent and mystical allure that defined European art at the turn of the century. Watercolor, gouache, and gold pigment on paper. Diameter 15 cm (Tondo).
