Jewish painter, born in Krzemienieczuk, Ukraine, received his first artistic education in Vilnius, then in Kiev, from 1913 in Paris, where he began his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts and became friends with Pablo Picasso, his close friends also included Chaim Soutine and Marc Chagall, after the outbreak of World War I he continued his studies in St. Petersburg, in 1916. exhibited his works for the first time at a salon of Jewish artists in Moscow, after the Bolshevik Revolution he went to Berlin and then settled in Paris, where he co-founded the so-called Jewish School of Paris and, more broadly, the École de Paris, being its prominent representative. He spent the years of World War II (1940-1945) in New York and the offered work, framed 70.5x85.5 cm, under glass, dates from this period.
