Adalbert Schäffer (1815-1871) , Opulent Still Life with Nautilus Cup and Precious Metalware

This magnificent and masterfully executed still life reflects the height of 19th-century academic realism and decorative virtuosity, characteristic of the celebrated painter Adalbert Schäffer. Known for his exquisite attention to texture and light, Schäffer constructs a lavish pronkstillevens (ostentatious still life) that evokes the grandeur of Dutch and Flemish Baroque masterpieces.
The composition centers on a dazzling, ornate nautilus shell cup mounted in intricately chased gold, flanked by other precious artifacts including Renaissance-style metal vessels, cups, and a sculptural tankard. Interspersed among these luxury items are natural elements—plump plums, delicate red currants, cascading drapery, and a hint of foliage—creating a rich contrast between cold metal, shimmering nacre, and organic softness.
Works of this ambitious scale and complexity by Schäffer are highly prized by collectors for their dazzling illusionism, deep chiaroscuro, and technical brilliance in rendering reflections on polished gold and silver surfaces. It stands as a magnificent testament to the artist's enduring legacy within 19th-century European painting. Oil on wood panel, 69 x 58 cm
