Italian Mints - BERGAMO Common in the name of Frederick II (1236-14th cent.) Large 6 Denarius - MIR 16a AG (g 2.03) RR The coins of the mint of Bergamo, minted under Frederick II of Swabia, have the privilege of being among those pieces that marked an important stage in medieval coinage. Frederick, in fact, was the first emperor to reintroduce the portrait on issues in his name in medieval Italy.
All of his coins from the Bergamo mint have the same characteristics: on the D/ the emperor's portrait in profile, laureate and covered by the paludamentum, an idea obviously taken from Roman coinage; on the R/, on the other hand, we find the depiction of the city, with a level of detail that varies according to the size of the coin's module, accompanied by the city's Latin name, PGAMVN.
These coins, like all of Frederick II's coinage, survived the sovereign's death for quite some time, until the early 14th century, when the mint closed its doors for good. Gorgeous patina with bluish highlights.
