A small silver commemorative medal, known as a Siegespfennig, struck to commemorate the victory of the Prussian-Russian forces at the Battle of Luckau on 4 June 1813. The issue belongs to a series of miniature medals commemorating Allied victories over the Napoleonic army, produced by the Berlin medallic workshop of Daniel Friedrich Loos.
The engagement took place during the spring campaign of the War of the Sixth Coalition. The corps commanded by the Prussian general Friedrich Wilhelm von Bülow halted the French troops of Marshal Nicolas Oudinot advancing towards Berlin. The victory forced the French to retreat and thwarted their attempt to capture the Prussian capital.
The obverse depicts Victoria, the winged goddess of victory, holding a sword and a laurel wreath. The surrounding inscription GOTT SEGNETE DIE VEREINIGTEN HEERE – “God blessed the united armies” – gives the issue a patriotic and religious character.
Medal with a suspension loop and ring.
An interesting relic of the Napoleonic Wars, commemorating one of General von Bülow’s first victories in the defence of Berlin.
