2 Birr 1982, a commemorative coin from Ethiopia issued to mark the FIFA World Cup held in Spain.
The obverse features the head of a roaring lion, while the reverse depicts two soccer players against a backdrop of globes and the inscription “WORLD FOOTBALL 1982.”
The coin is struck in cupronickel.
The exact mintage is unknown. Some sources cite a figure of 200,000 pieces, but there is no reliable catalog confirmation of this number.
The coin is housed in its original PhilSwiss collector’s envelope.
The envelope is complemented by a 15-cent Ethiopian postage stamp from the “Ethiopian House Architecture” series, depicting traditional houses of the Konso people. Stamp design: Bogale Belachew.
The envelope was postmarked in Addis Ababa by the Philatelic Department on May 27, 1985.
