LT.7224 - DT.517 - Scheers 459-460; Bronze - 2.76 g - 17 mm - 1 h
MP specimen No. 180 in the book “Surréelles Monnaies Gauloises,” by Samuel Gouet and Marc Petit—acquired from A. Weil, January 15, 2006, Lot No. 320 (Thomasset Collection).
A superb bronze specimen of this rare type, struck on a slightly scyphate, wide, and oval blank. Both the obverse and reverse are complete and vigorously struck, with a green patina. Superb.
Although this bronze coin logically belongs to the “rooster set” typological series, the style of the head, the type of flan, and the engraving seem to us to be closer to certain coins featuring a helmeted head from Series 46 (see DT. 385, 386, and 386A). While the helmeted bust is very similar, our bronze nevertheless differs in the absence of secondary animals in front of the profile, which is adorned only with large S-shaped motifs. This bronze coin is classified as var. 1 of Class III, featuring a rooster without a human profile. Our specimen comes from the same dies as the one illustrated in the *Nouvel Atlas* (DT. 517)
