Biography
He studied at the School of Decorative Arts in Poznań and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków in the studios of F. Pautsch and F. S. Kowarski. In the late 1920s, he moved to Warsaw. There, he made his debut in 1932 at the 2nd IPS Salon. He was a member of the Pryzmat group. After the war, he lived in Poznań and Kraków, where he eventually settled permanently. From a young age, he was interested in abstraction; during his studies in Kraków, he associated with the Futurists. He painted landscapes, still lifes, and portraits, and was also the creator of polychromatic works (including those in the Churches of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Martin in Poznań). In Paris, he joined the Colorism circle, whose color palette he maintained in the subsequent years of his career, though with a strict limitation on the colors he used. The artist’s compositions were characterized by the reduction of figures or objects to a synthetic symbol, while preserving the decorative function of the painting.
