Drawing in ink and acrylic on paper, 27cm x 35cm, framed in passe-partout 40x50 without frame
Those who have seen a flamenco show will sense the temperamental movement, characteristic gestures and clapped-out rhythm in Maria's drawings. The way of drawing refers to the dance. Studying Maria's drawings, one can see many elements of dance, such as movements of the arms, hands and fingers. A flamenco dancer tells a story with his dance and gestures have specific meanings. Just as in flamenco the body movements and gestures express certain emotional states of the dancer in Maria the lines, spots, dots, emphasize the expressiveness of the viewer's experience while watching the flamenco dance. The expressively drawn figures have almost abstract forms. However, we easily recognize the characteristic elements of the dancers' costumes - a wide ruffled skirt, a flared scarf, a fan, a flower in the hair. The drawing swirls like a dancer and we feel the rhythm tapped out by the feet of the dancers, clapping, snapping fingers or hitting the cajón in the multiplied forms and marks of the drawing.
