Antoninianus of Emperor Probus (AD 276–282), struck at the Rome mint, belonging to issues produced during a period of active military campaigns and consolidation of imperial authority following the crisis of the 3rd century. The coinage of Probus is notable for its rich variety of types and dynamic iconography, often emphasizing his military character and personal involvement in warfare.

The obverse features a radiate, helmeted and cuirassed bust of the emperor facing left, holding a spear and shield, with the legend IMP PROBVS AVG. This strongly militarized portrait type is among the more striking iconographic variants, presenting the emperor as an active commander and defender of the Empire.

The reverse depicts Probus on horseback advancing left, raising his right hand in a gesture of greeting (adventus) while holding a sceptre in the other; to the left stands a captive with hands bound behind his back. The scene is accompanied by the legend ADVENTVS AVG and the mark R✱Γ in the exergue. This motif refers to the ceremonial arrival of the emperor, most often to Rome or another प्रमुख center, following a successful campaign.

The legend ADVENTVS AVG (“the arrival of the Augustus”) belongs to the standard repertoire of imperial propaganda, emphasizing the triumphal return of the ruler and his military achievements. The presence of the captive further reinforces the message of victory and dominance over defeated enemies, making this issue a clear statement of imperial and authority.
