Still Life by Pinchus Krémègne - an artist from the École de Paris circle, a friend of Chaïm Soutine and Michel Kikoine - is a vibrant and colorful example of expressive painting, in which form is subordinated to emotion and color. Krémègne operates impasto and color contrast in a spontaneous manner, without losing his sense of composition. His flowers seem to vibrate in space, animated by the nervous rhythm of his brushstrokes.
The work fits well into the stylistics of the artist's later years, when the subject of still life and landscape predominated in his work. The dynamic texture of the paint, the synthetic form and the vivid color palette give the work a decorative yet intimate feel.
Pinchus Krémègne (1890-1981). He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vilna. There he met Chaim Soutine and Michel Kikoine. Krémegne went to Paris in 1912 and settled in the notorious La Ruche in Montparnassie. The painter revolved among the city's artistic bohemia. He created landscapes, portraits and still lifes, in which he paid particular attention to color qualities and expressive, dynamic line.
