Wojciech Tracewski's paintings are part of the New Expression current initiated in the 1980s, which reached its apogee in 1986-1987. The artists, gathered in these artistic circles, were isolated from the official circulation of art at the beginning due to martial law - a time of difficult socio-political and cultural conditions.
Despite this, in 1987, in the space of the former Norblin plant, on the initiative of Andrzej Bonarski, the most important exhibition was held, bringing together and presenting current trends in recent art. In addition to Wojciech Tracewski and Zbigniew Maciej Dowgiałło, the presentation of "What's Up" included such artists as Mirosław Bałka, Grzegorz Klaman, Zbigniew Libera, Jerzy Truszkowski, Włodzimierz Pawlak, Jarosław Modzelewski, Ryszard Woźniak, Ryszard Grzyb, Marek Sobczyk, Leon Tarasewicz, Szymon Urbański, among others. The Andrzej Bonarski publishing house published a book in 1989 entitled "What's Up. Recent Art." It is an expanded catalog edited by Maryla Sitkowska. Tracewski himself gave up active painting to return on the occasion of the East Beast Polish New Expression exhibition from the 1980s, presenting a series of 11 canvases.
