Krystyna BRZECHWA
b. 1928 Warsaw
Graduated from the Painting Department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw in 1955, receiving her diploma in the studio of Prof. Eugeniusz Eibisch. In the same year she made her debut at the Exhibition of Young Visual Arts at the Warsaw Arsenal. Since 1955, she has presented dozens of solo exhibitions in Warsaw and other centers in the country, as well as in Arnhem, London, Stockholm, New York, among others. During martial law, she was active in the independent culture movement, co-organizing and participating in church exhibitions, mainly in Warsaw. Since her early years, the artist has displayed a homogeneous style, based on naive painting, while owing much to the fantastic visions of Marc Chagall. She creates metaphorical figurative scenes, presenting a world "not of this earth," seen as if through the eyes of a child, and at the same time full of existential reverie and moral reflection. Her paintings are populated with characters straight from fairy tales, grotesque, commedia dell'arte. The artist uses strong, saturated, contrasting colors, resolutely draws the contours of shapes. In addition to painting, she also illustrates children's books (including fairy tales by her father, Jan Brzechwa) and does stage design.
