The Creation of Man.
Oil on board, signed "Gronowski 56." (1956). Dimensions: 128 x 117.5 cm (in frame: 140 x 130 cm).
This is an amazing work of modern art from the middle of the 20th century. One of a kind! Inspired by Michelangelo's famous fresco in the Sistine Chapel. It illustrates the biblical creation story from Genesis, in which God gives life to Adam. The kinetic energy of God's creative power depicted here is almost tangible. Tadeusz Lucjan Gronowski (1894-1990), graphic designer, poster artist, painter, book illustrator, architect, designer of postage stamps. He is considered one of the pioneers of modern Polish poster art. His name is usually associated with advertising designs for companies such as Wedel and Orbis, and the distinctive logo of LOT Polish Airlines, which is still used today. His advertising placards are an excellent example of the art deco style. Gronowski was an extremely versatile artist, interested in everything from graphic design, painting, stage design, advertising, large-format polychromes or interior design, as exemplified by the magnificent crystal candelabras and chandeliers of his authorship that adorn the Column Hall in the Polish Parliament. In 1917-25 he studied at the Faculty of Architecture at the Warsaw University of Technology. He studied painting techniques at the École Supérieur des Beaux-Arts in Paris. As a graphic artist, he collaborated with magazines, including "Skamander" (from 1920) and "Życie Literackie" (from 1924). In his paintings of the late 1950s, he referred to the aesthetics of Cubism. In the late 1960s he created abstract, geometric compositions. He designed illustrations for many books, including Pan Tadeusz by Adam Mickiewicz. He was professionally active almost until the end of his life.
