A trilogy encompassing a panorama of Polish life in the pre-war period and during the years of World War I. Young architect Ryszard Nienaski undertakes a lonely "battle with Satan" for a more just world. A symbol of his social aspirations is, among other things, the unfinished project to rebuild the old Arian church and create a people's educational center in it. With his usual finesse, the writer presented romance plots. Also outstanding are the images of life - be it metropolitan Paris or provincial Galician Posucha - and the images of war, drawn with passion expressing the writer's anti-war protest. Some parts of the work are maintained in the poetics of predatory naturalism.
Illustrations by Krzysztof Henisz. Afterword by Stanislaw Pigon.
