Biography
Maria Węgrzyniak-Szczepkowska (b. 1954) is a visual artist and historian of philosophy, known for her unique approach to contemporary textile art. Her distinctive, original tapestries combine traditional weaving techniques with an innovative use of unconventional materials, such as recycled fabrics, paper, cables, and clothing elements. Thanks to her original technical solutions and insightful themes, her works have garnered recognition in numerous art competitions. In 2015, the artist received honorable mentions in three prestigious competitions: the MUZA 2015 – Magdalena Abakanowicz Competition, the 5th National Art Competition, and the Tapestry of the Year Competition. In 2017, she was a finalist in the international YICCA Contest in Rome. Her works have also been presented at the Artistic Textile Biennial in Skierniewice (2016, 2018), as well as in numerous solo exhibitions, including at the following galleries in Warsaw: the “Piecowa” Gallery (2016), the “Pogodna” Center for Creative Activities (2017), and the “Po prawej stronie Wisły” Gallery (2019), where she presented an exhibition titled “Essential Threads.” She also participated in the group exhibition *8 Women* at Konduktorownia in Częstochowa (2018).
