Biography
A representative of the contemporary avant-garde in painting, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków in the studios of Zbigniew Pronaszka and Karol Frycz. At the same time, he studied art history at Jagiellonian University under the supervision of Wojsław Mole. In 1949, he moved to Warsaw. From 1956 to 1961, he collaborated with the Krzywe Koło Gallery, run by Marian Bogusz. From 1962 to 1996, he taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, where he served as dean of the Faculty of Painting from 1975 to 1981 and was elected rector-elect in 1983. The martial law authorities categorically rejected his candidacy. In the 1980s, he was associated with the “independent culture” circle. In 1980, he received the Jan Cybis Award.
