Malwina Niespodziewana—a graduate of the Faculty of Graphic Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. She completed her diploma project in 1998 in the studio of Prof. Stanisław Wejman (Ceremonies), receiving honors and the Rector’s Medal. In 2007, she received her Doctor of Fine Arts degree from the same university. The advisor for her doctoral dissertation (The Body: An Artistic Concept of the Universal Body) was Prof. Jacek Gaj.
She lives and works in Kraków.
A graphic artist, creator of spatial and video installations, and author of the artistic concept of the universal body. In her work, she combines various artistic techniques—graphic art, artist’s books, and installation. The body remains a constant point of reference in her work: physiology, gender, symbolism, and the rituals that various cultures associate with the body (e.g., tattoos), as well as the history of representations of the body (the artist draws inspiration from, among other things, old anatomical atlases). As Magdalena Ujma writes, “…the human being remains the central theme and main motif of Malwina Niespodziewana’s work. This has been the case from the very beginning, and there are virtually no exceptions to this rule. The artist remains faithful to her greatest passion, her greatest interest, perhaps even her obsession—the figure and figuration.”
An important element of her work is the journal she has been keeping for many years, as well as her artistic travels (especially to the Far East).
The artist is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including a Scholarship from the Minister of Culture and Art (1997/98), a Scholarship: “Mythological Europe Revisited,” Borgo della Fratta, Italy (1998), the City of Kraków Creative Fellowship (1999), and the Grand Prix at the International Biennial of Graphics of the Baltic Sea Countries in Kaliningrad–Königsberg, Russia (2005). In 2002, she was nominated for the D. Chodowiecki Award.
Her works have been presented at numerous solo and group exhibitions in Poland, Germany, Austria, France, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, Spain, Slovenia, Italy, Russia, the U.S., the Czech Republic, South Korea, and Japan. They can be found in the collections of the National Museum in Kraków, the Museum of Paper, the Mino Kanagawa Prefectural Gallery (Kanagawa, Japan), the Uppsala Art Museum (Uppsala, Sweden), the Polish Museum of America (Chicago, USA), the Kaliningrad Art Gallery (Kaliningrad, Russia), the Print and Drawing Gallery at the Cremona Civic Museum (Italy), as well as in numerous private collections in Poland and abroad.
