Ludwik Hipolit Kurella,also known as Ludwik von Kurella (born August 13, 1834 in Warsaw, died May 12, 1902there) - Polish painter.He began his study of painting from the studio of Raphael Hadziewicz at the Warsaw School of Fine Arts, and continued it, studying from 1857 at the Academy of Fine Arts inDresden(Hochschulefür BildendeKünsteDresden) under Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld.
He was considered by critics to be one of the outstanding paintersbelongingto thePolish art colonyactivethere, andmaintained social contacts withJózef Brandt,JózefChełmońskiand Maksymilian and Aleksander Gierymski.Whilelivingaway from his homeland,hesent his works to painting exhibitions organized in Warsaw, Cracow and Lviv, andbelonged to the Society for theEncouragement ofFineArts.Ludwik Kurella began with sacred themes, and in his mature periodpaintedlandscapesrelated to the Polishcountryside, a characteristicfeatureof whichwas thefrequently used motifofaflowingriver.In addition, he was the author of portraits, Italianlandscapesandpaintings inspired by thepoetry of Adam Mickiewicz.He was a well-known and appreciatedartistbelongingto the so-calledMunich school, his paintingswere highly valued andeagerly purchased byAmerican and German collectors. He was the author of the painting decorations of many Polishchurches, including the cathedral in Poznan . Towardthe end of his life hereturned tosacredart,often inspired by biblical descriptions.
