Jean Maurice Eugène Clément Cocteau - French poet, playwright, film director, screenwriter, painter, as well as stage choreographer and boxing manager. His art reflects the influence of Futurism, Cubism, Dadaism, Surrealism, as well as metaphysical poetry. He was one of the first to realize the full vision of Surrealism in film. He popularized mythological themes in 20th century art. About himself he said: "I am a lie that always tells the truth."
The series of works "Europe" focuses on mythological, historical and cultural themes related to Europe, both as a continent and as an idea, constituting a reflection on European destiny and identity. "Europe" can be read as a meditation on the fate of the continent, especially in the context of the difficulties of the 20th century, such as world wars, the disintegration of empires and the revival of the idea of European unity. Cocteau raises questions about the boundaries and possibilities of Europe, both geographically and culturally. Cocteau used a light, flowing line and pastel colors, which give his works an almost sketchy character. His paintings have a poetic, ephemeral feel to them, and many are kept simple in form, which reflects his interest in surrealism and classical minimalism.
