Biography
From 1948 to 1953, he studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art. He then graduated from the Department of Art and Architecture at Yale University alongside Josef Albers. Anuszkiewicz is considered one of the founders of Op Art. Early in his career, the artist created a series of large, painted wooden objects of various shapes that directly engaged with space. Through a few simple techniques—including varying the thickness of vertical lines of a single color set against a contrasting, nearly monochromatic background—Anuszkiewicz achieved a spatial radiance of color. These works, inspired in part by “The Temple of Golden Red,” were constructed differently from his earlier abstract paintings, without relying on the optical illusions and perceptual effects typical of that movement. In his compositions, Anuszkiewicz most often uses basic geometric figures to create the illusion of movement in abstract images.
