Eduard Ivanovich Totleben, born 20.5.1818 in Mitava, died 1.8.1884 in Soden - engineer general (1869), adjutant general (1855) of the Russian army, count. In the 1860s he gave the order to expand and add to the Novogorgievsk (Modlin) fortress. On his orders, a 2-kilometer-long perimeter of defensive barracks calculated to accommodate 20,000 soldiers, typical of Russian fortifications, was built after 1864 inside the French bastion core. Shielded from 4 caponiers, the barracks became the third perimeter of the Modlin fortress (according to Wikipedia).
