Lapis lazuli casket, Grand Tour souvenir, France, 19th century.
Lapis Lazuli stone, glass, gold, brass: 6.5 x 4 x 3 cm.
The casket dates from the mid-19th century. The form is typical of French art of the period, similar caskets were a cherished souvenir brought back from the so-called Grand Tour - trips taken around Europe by young people from aristocratic and/or wealthy families to supplement their education.
State of preservation: very good (the sides were replaced from stone to glass and the legs were replaced with coral. Changes were made in the past, also have their historical value).
