Szymczyk, Maciej (ed.) – Treasury Notes from the Time of the Kościuszko Uprising, Duszniki-Zdrój 2024, ISBN 9788360990773
123 pages, format approx. 21 x 21 cm, softcover. The first contemporary catalog of its kind describing banknotes from the time of the Kościuszko Uprising. The catalog presents, among other things, the economic situation of the Polish lands in the second half of the 18th century and the origins of the concept of introducing paper money in Poland. It presents the design of the first banknote dated 1791, the relevant legal acts, the methods of production and security features of the banknotes, the system of numbering and signing them, as well as their print run and distribution. It also showcases a complete collection of treasury notes from the time of the Kościuszko Uprising. Color photographs depict both sides of each banknote as well as a “translucent image” (watermark). For each banknote, the following information is provided: date of issue, period of circulation, dimensions, serial number, description of the front and back, type of paper, printing technique, designers (general and detailed), printing house, watermark, and reference number. Examples are also presented, including three uncut 10 groszy copper treasury notes (“accounting złoty”) and a printing sheet for these notes. The catalog concludes with a chapter describing and illustrating the image of Tadeusz Kościuszko on Polish banknotes. References to the bibliography are included directly in the text. An interesting addition is the reproduction of a 1 zł treasury note from 1794, enclosed in a pocket and printed on handmade paper made from cotton rags at the Duszniki paper mill.
