Biography
He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, where in 1983 he received his diploma with honors from S. Gierowski’s painting studio. That same year, he became the youngest member of “Gruppa.” Until 1989, he painted figurative works, often with historical and patriotic references. In the early 1990s, he created a series of collages in which he focused on the aesthetics of everyday life, with evocative titles such as: “Exercises in the Aesthetics in Which I Grew Up,” “Landmarks Necessary to Avoid Madness.” In the 2000s, political themes continued to be part of Kowalewski’s artistic practice, as evidenced by series that fit into the anti-totalitarian discourse: “You Must Not!” (2010) and “Simulator of Totalitarianism” (2012). Since 1985, he has been a lecturer at the Faculty of Design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, where he was awarded the title of professor in 2019.
