Artur Markowicz (1872-1934) was a Jewish painter and printmaker born in Krakow's Podgórze district. He was born into a merchant family and began his higher education with technical studies, which he soon abandoned, however, studying at Krakow's Academy of Fine Arts from 1886 to 1895. From 1896 to 1903 he lived in Germany and studied art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Franz Stuck. He then went to Paris, where he graduated from the École des Beaux-Arts under Jean-Léon Gérôme. Along with Arthur Szyk, Mane Katz, Arthur Kolnik and Chaim Goldberg, he was one of the greatest Polish artists of Jewish origin.
