1890-1900 | Metal base | 46.5 cm (height) | provenance: private pharmaceutical Museum
Lot description
The metal base of the scale is marked: Prof. Bauers getreideprüfer ("getreideprüfer" is German for "grain inspector") and has a threaded hole for a tall brass rod that supports a straight arm scale. The bar is equipped with clips that hold the glass tube. The 150 gram weight is sized to fit a bowl suspended from the left arm of the scale, while a brass grain container hangs from the right arm. The hopper is designed with a funnel-shaped bottom with a stem that is fitted with a stopper for filling. After filling the hopper with enough grain to balance the 150 gram weight, the hopper is removed from the hanger and the stem is set into the glass density. By pulling the stopper, the contents can be emptied into the glass tube. The tube is marked with a scale from 120 to 220.
These scales were designed by Professor Bauers of Vienna. Professor Bauers was a prominent figure in the world of agronomy and grain processing technology. His work focused on the development of methods and tools for accurately measuring the quality and properties of grain, which was crucial for the agricultural industry. The scales were specially developed for grain quality testing. This device allowed accurate measurement of the density and other physical properties of grains, which was important for determining their quality and suitability for further processing.
