Weingut Prieler is one of the stars of Austrian winemaking and basta. A small family-run estate run by Georg - a young winemaker, extremely but already recognized, winner of the Winemaker of the Year award from the prestigious Falstaf magazine.
A true master of the pinot blanc and blaufrankisch varietals. The producer offers several series of wines, among which we find labels focused on the expression of fruit, terroir or the winemaker's plan for a particular fruit lot.
We take a closer look at one of the most important interpretations of the blaufrankisch varietal - Marienthal. This is a wine from a single vineyard, rebuilt from historic plantings that the family had to get rid of at some point. It was famous for its old vines, and today Georg is patiently waiting until, working with fruit from new plantings, he can relate to the style of the old wines. Technically, the fruit here benefits from the limestone soils found where the vineyards approach the town of Oggau. Here it gives the wine a freshness and minerality that blends well with the character of the variety, which is always dominated by forest fruits and heavily spiced and herbal. The wine is aged in barrels, but these are large oak vats that gently handle the bouquet of the wine. The result is a spacious, elegant, mineral structure, with cool fruit and pronounced acidity. As time goes by, sweet, spicy and smoky barrel notes begin to ring out in it. A wine with very high potential for maturation. Today it is perhaps in the middle of its journey.
