Leon Sapieha (1557-1633) - Hetman Grand Hetman of Lithuania, Grand Chancellor of Lithuania, Voivode of Vitebsk and Starosta of Ustvitsa, representative of the powerful Sapieha family. He was educated in Western Europe, and upon his return to his homeland began his career as a civil servant and military officer. He took part in Stefan Batory's wars against Moscow, distinguishing himself by his courage and commanding abilities. As Lithuanian chancellor, he took care of the development of the administration and defense of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and was an advocate of strong royal power and reforms to improve the functioning of the state. Appointed Grand Hetman of Lithuania in 1625, he led defensive operations against Moscow and Sweden. He went down in history as an efficient politician, diplomat and patron of culture, striving to strengthen Lithuania as part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
